Created in 1970, the Appalachian State University Foundation is a support organization of the university that receives and invests private funds to help further the institution’s academic mission. The foundation provided more than $11 million in support to university activities in 2006-07.

Contributions to the Appalachian State University Foundation support the Visiting Writers Series
Established in 1989, the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series brings authors of poetry, fiction, and drama to the Appalachian campus each year to present public readings. One of the five writers presented this fall was N.C. Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer. For more information, call (828) 262-2871.

Unrestricted donations to the foundation fund speaker fees, lodging and other expenses, such as printing and academic regalia rental. Award-winning author Paul Cuadros was the guest speaker for Appalachian State University’s Convocation Sept. 6.

Contributions to the Appalachian State University Foundation support activities of the Marching Mountaineer Band
Unrestricted contributions made to the Appalachian Fund are used to commission music arrangements performed during half-time shows. That means fans attending home football games, or one of the band’s high school exhibition shows, enjoy arrangements that they won’t hear performed by any other marching band. Contributions also help with uniform repair and replacement, and offset travel costs when the band is invited to perform at exhibitions.

The Appalachian State University Foundation has established the Foundation Fellows Program designed to support professional development in teaching, scholarship or creative activity. A total of $100,000 will be awarded to professors and instructors in 2007-08. The program provided $50,000 in support in 2006-07 to a total of 16 faculty. |
A total of 55 students from underrepresented populations have received scholarships to attend Appalachian thanks to donations made to the Appalachian State University Foundation. |
